An amusing (I think) anecdote which illuminates class differences in Scotland perfectly, and therefore can only be understood if you imagine the exchange detailed below taking place with Scottish accents.
My wife, Carolyn, while in her very first job after leaving school, was approached by a co-worker who asked, in a broad Glasgow accent: “So, do you live in a boat hoose?”
“Pardon?”
“Do you live in a boat hoose?”
Carolyn, completely bewildered, replied: “You mean, a canal barge?”
“Naw! A BOAT HOOSE! Do you live in a boat hoose or a cooncil hoose?”
