Merry Christmas Everybody – Slade
YES, this is my third favourite Christmas song of all time and yes, this is me with none other than Noddy Holder.
What’s not to like about this song? And again, there are no obvious trademarks identifying it as a Christmas song (other than the lyrics, of course, which are terrific) – no bells or choirs. It wasn’t even originally composed as a Christmas song – the lyrics were changed afterwards. But this deserves all the airtime it inevitably gets each year.
And no, I didn’t say: “Noddy, yours is my third favourite Christmas song ever!”

Ooh….
I’ve been with you on most of your choices.
But not this one.
I consider myself a centre-to-left-of-centre kinda guy, leaning more liberally socially than economically. I’m for human rights, a small state and no death penalty…
But know this. For the good of all humanity, my first act on becoming Supreme Leader would be to execute Noddy Holder, for Crimes Against Music.
It’s nothing personal. Just if you kill him, burn all copies of the recording, make playing it a capital offence and destroy any copies of the lyrics/score, I might just, in years hence, be saved from hearing that god-damned fu*&ing song.
