NOW that I’ve actually seen the list of 25 DVDs that President Obama gave Gordon on his recent trip to Washington (courtesy of Richard), I have a question (well, three questions, actually): How many have you seen, how many do you already own on DVD (or video) and how many haven’t you seen?
Take two points for every film you own and have seen (only one if you own it but haven’t got round to watching it yet), one point if you’ve seen it but don’t own the DVD, and no points for those you haven’t either watched, purchased or been given.
Here’s mine:
OWN: The Godfather, Star Wars: Episode IV, It’s a Wonderful Life, To Kill a Mockingbird (8 points)
SEEN: All the above plus Citizen Kane, Raging Bull, Singin’ in the Rain, Lawrence of Arabia, Schindler’s List, Vertigo, The Wizard of Oz, The Searchers, Psycho, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Graduate, On the Waterfront, Chinatown, Some Like it Hot, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial (15 points)
NEVER SEEN: Gone With The Wind, City Lights, Sunset Boulevard, Casablanca, The General, The Grapes of Wrath. Giving me a total of 23 out of a possible total 50.
I will now tag the following five bloggers to offer their own asessments, and hope that Richard’s list was accurate: Tom Watson, Iain Dale, Kerry McCarthy, Mike Elrick and Sadie Smith.

Own none, seen none of the others.
10 points.

Right. Being a bit of a film buff, over the years I’ve seen them all, (misspent youth) with the sole exception of The Wizard of Oz, which I’ve never been able to watch all the way through because of boredom – though have watched enough of it over the years to have seen the start, end etcetera.
Of the films listed I own The Godfather, The Searchers, Lawrence of Arabia and It’s a Wonderful Life. I used to have Citizen Kane and Sunset Boulevard on video but they bit the dust some time ago.
So I think I score 29 points.
Out of the original list,Sunset Boulevard by the great Billy Wilder, The Godfather, Chinatown, Kane, The Searchers and Casablanca are the best films in my view.
Just think of the political films or those with political content – Obama could have put on the list though:
Taxi Driver
The Parallax View
The Manchurian Candidate
The Candidate
The Best Man
All The President’s Men
Wag The Dog
Power

Games? Jolly D.
Own and seen:
Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Raging Bull, Lawrence of Arabia, Sunset Boulevard, Vertigo, Chinatown, Some Like it Hot = 16

Never seen: The Grapes of Wrath. What? Never seen the GoW. Steinbeck? Yet you’ve seen all that other crap, especially ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. Never seen ‘City Lights?’
Well, who would watch Chaplin when you can watch Keaton? Yah!
= ehm, 30 then. Is that good? Bad? Who cares?
Oh wait. I get it. Tom is just seeing whom he can add to his list (Harris’s List) of those of us with too much time on our hands.
It’s a fair cop.
‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’ is my favourite at the moment. Does that help at all?

You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.

@ Anoneumouse – “Don’t we all own these DVD’s surely it was a gift to the nation?”
You seem to be assuming that Gordon didn’t chuck them out of the limo window on the way to Dulles airport or use them as coasters on the flight…

I demand that these gifts to the nation be broadcast on the BBC for us to gawk at in awe!
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 12:07 am
I’ve done rather embarrassingly well:
Own: Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Casablanca, Raging Bull, Schindler’s List, Vertigo, City Lights, Psycho, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Graduate, The General, On the Waterfront, It’s a Wonderful Life, Chinatown, Some Like it Hot (15 DVDs – 30 points)

Neither: Singin’ in the Rain, The Searchers, Sunset Boulevard, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird. (5 DVDs – 0 points)
Making a total of 35/50… Is that good or bad?
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 12:25 am
Mark – you’re in the lead. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing…
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 1:00 am
i am in with a pathetic 19, but as it is a list that is short on jason statham and steven seagal movies that is to be expected.
i wonder if the white house got a nice deal on the dvds from amazon?
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 1:40 am
Just 17, I fear:
Owned and seen:
Vertigo, Psycho, Casablanca = 6
Seen:
Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, 2001:Space Odyssey, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, Some Like it Hot, The Wizard of Oz, The Grapes of Wrath, On the Waterfront, It’s a Wonderful Life,The Graduate, To Kill a Mockingbird. =11
Neither:
Raging Bull (I tried, but fell asleep), Singin’ in the Rain, Gone with the Wind, City Lights, The Searchers, Star Wars: Episode IV, The Godfather, Schindler’s List, Sunset Boulevard, The General, Chinatown.
A good job I’m a Hitchcock freak or I’d have been REALLY shown up.

7-8 points here. I own a copy of Return of the Jedi. Actually I have about 3 different copies (original, remastered, remastered on DVD).
I’ve also got a copy of Schindlers List somewhere but I rarely watch it as it makes me angry (hardcore political types like me don’t cry). I’ve seen 2001 (naturally), ET, and the Graduate. I *think* I’ve seen Wizard of Oz. Although probably not all the way through, so that’s a possible 7, out of 50.
Am I right in thinking I’m not at the top of the chart here.
On the plus side though, if the PM or FM visit Japan at any time soon and they gift him likewise, I’ll score a lot better. Particularly on anime classics; Ghost in the Shell, Angel’s Egg, all the Miyazaki’s (including his earlier works like Valley of the Winds, a world classic that too many will not have seen)….
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 4:04 am
I score a lowly 14 points.
Now if the list of DVDs included classics like ‘Police Academy’, ‘Porky’s’ and ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ (“Those aren’t pillows!”) I’d be up there with the best of ‘em.
Also, I may have misunderstood this but I thought this crappy excuse for a present represented the best of American cinema. Surely ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ was a British film?
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 7:51 am
I hope Gordon’s DVD player will play them
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 7:58 am
Math Campbell at 3.59 am(!): Return of the Jedi doesn’t count; it was Episode IV: A New Hope that GB was given.

Is owning a business specialising in classic films on DVD cheating?
Despite this, I’m not the winner. Sad but true.
Wednesday 11 March 2009 at 11:43 am

Thursday 12 March 2009 at 12:11 am
Ooops, mea culpa.
I’d read that IV as VI.
Score stands since I own ALL the original trilogy 3 times over.
And I even have the preligy, somewhere.
Think my Phantom Menace copy might have some scratching damage on the disc where I scrawled “Jar-Jar must die” without realising it…..
Thursday 12 March 2009 at 11:00 am
I scored 1, Lawrence of Arabia. It was much inferior to the book.
