WHILE exiting BBC Scotland’s Atlantic Quay headquarters last week, I bumped into Billy Boyd (above, right), the Scottish actor who played a Hobbit (either Merry or Pippin, not sure which) in The Lord of the Rings.
I introduced myself and we chatted during the short walk to the car park. I confessed to being a “Rings” fan and then added: “I think you’re excellent in Lost.”
Okay, I didn’t really, but admit it — that would have been a funny line.

That’s the kind of arrogance you normally see in a conservative Toff…
Begging your pardon..doff me! cap tug me forelock!

That’s a bit Hobbitist isn’t it? ‘Little people’ – they’re halflings too you know.

A nice variety of accents had the hobbits considering they’d lived their whole lives within ten yards of eachother.
I’m afraid I couldn’t get ‘into’ the film.
When the fellow came on and said, ‘I am Boromir, son of Adrahil of Dol Amroth and Denethor, Stewart of Gondor’, I thought, ‘No, you’re not, you’re Sean Bean out of Sharpe, you’re married to Aveline out of Bread, and you’ve got ‘100% Blades’ tattooed on your right arm’.
When Arwen Evenstar came on screen all I could think was, ‘That’s the girl that pole-danced in her dad’s video’.
Film 3 was just one long Elijah Bloom whinge-athon. I ended up cheering on the gollum.

I am selling the trilogy at a carboot sale on Sunday. 2 & 3 are unopened. Good book though.

Merry is on the left, Pippin is on the right.
Sammy – one of the first lines that Sean Bean has in LoTR happens just after he cuts himself on a sword. He says “hmmm, still sharp”. Must’ve amused him a bit.

I dragged a rather reluctant friend to see every part on successive Boxing Days. I absolutely loved it and still occasionally watch the DVDs (sad, I realise!). Peter Jackson faithfully translated on to the screen the images I’d conjured up when I read the books as a teenager.
Having been horrified at the cartoon version of The Hobbit for which I’d queued round the block of The Odeon in Glasgow (a large block) in the rain (natch) I was prepared to be disappointed but I’d happily sit through all three parts back to back!

Jay: “Having been horrified at the cartoon version of The Hobbit…”
Are you sure it was The Hobbit you saw and not Ralph Bakshi’s attempt at Lord of the Rings? (He intended to produce LOTR in two parts but the second instalment never arrived.) As far as I know there’s never been a film of The Hobbit, although Guillermo Del Toro is now making it.

Actually, I believe you’re right, Tom. I have a dim memory that the first film was so derided that the second never happened!!
Are you serious about Guillermo? I’ve only seen one of his films, “Pan’s Labyrinth” but, going by that, he should produce a decent ‘Hobbit’.
