THE GREAT thing about having a reasonably well-read political blog is that I have a platform for correcting any inadvertent mistakes made by others when referring to me personally. So I’d like to point out a small mistake carried by The Daily Record this morning:
Former transport minister and Glasgow MP Tom Harris asked the PM to step aside. But he was swatted away by an increasingly confident Brown
For the record, Gordon made no reference in his response to anything I said to him at the meeting.

You said he shook his head and smiled, which, I think, implies he was dismissive – much like the word “swatted”.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 12:18 pm
Of course he didn’t, Tom.
The Record is merely printing the No. 10
briefing paper they’ve just received.
You’ll see comments like that everywhere.
Surely you’re not surprised?
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 12:20 pm
Well, he didn’t hear you did he? He’s on planet Brown. He doesn’t interact with humans in this dimension.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 12:38 pm
I doubt that there was anything ‘inadvertent’ about this newspaper making this mistake.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 12:40 pm
According to the Record Gord’s great and in no real difficulties whatsoever! What a joke of a paper.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 1:12 pm
Well, if he didn’t accept any of what you said and then went on to articulate a message which contradicts your argument, he certainly then rejected your message. However, I agree with Andrew F when he says that ’swatted’ has connotations of being dismissive – he may well have rejected your arguments without being dismissive.
@Liberanos – Why would Number 10 want the PM to look even more arrogant than he already does? Surely they would be saying something like ‘The prime minister has listened to what his critics have to say but is confident that he has won the argument and is the best man to lead the party forward’?
If they didn’t say something like that, they are stupider than I thought they were.

Looks like this fellow has got the same No. 10 briefing paper the Record haw.

ha nice one, Sammy.
Andrew F duly swatted away.
Job done.
Next.

Tom
the Record has been a Labour supporting digrace for, well as long as I can remember! you are a Glasgow Labour MP with a decent majority….can you imagine the mis-interpretations (smears) that are written about the SNP!
by the way, I do admire your stance on Gordon Brown and at least you had the baws to say it to his face (unlike many of your pathetic colleges, cabinet included). I guess they really don’t get the way the wind is blowing. oh well.
one other serious point throughout all of this is, the extent to which the Labout party are obsessed with fighting/smearing each other and think that if they are united they will acheive support. They forget that if you only poll at 15% its usually the other 85% who determine the outcome of the election!!

I despise the MSM and they don’t come much worse than this particular rag. They recently did a character assassination on someone I know – front page job. I know that they were wrong, but the thing is that it was totally one-sided. Neither the other person nor his representatives were quoted. One of the article’s subheadings (continued on the inside) was “Scum”.
I am reminded of this quote:
“I don’t read the papers. I prefer to get my information from more reliable sources, like rumor and small children.”
Can anyone name the TV series?

I seem to remember you making risible remarks about the copy of “1984″ sent to you by libertarians.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 1:51 pm
I don’t read the Daily Record, it’s bad for the grey matter.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 2:06 pm
The DR seemed to be swithering last week chasing some of the doom-for-Brown stories, but it falls back so quickly into its comfort zone…
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 2:26 pm
It’s all in the micro-features. Run that bit again…
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 2:51 pm
dont worry tom, its just the briefing they were given to make u look like a fool!
brown wont change…the electorate wont change…the labour party wont change!
i heard he gave the speech of his life last night…isnt that the umpteenth speech of his life?
this guy will make everyone feel sorry for him then as soon as he has the confidence again he will start behaving as he did before!
but i think u already know that tom dont u!
the problem is, he has no mandate, wasnt elected and is now putting people in the cabinet who are also unelected…glennys kinnock! for goodness sake why?
trust me this guy is very dangerous to democracy…very dangerous.
i mean how will u ever get him out?
why does the great british public have to suffer this ridiculously shallow and career driven man in charge of us?
no wonder we are all in a state of depression…he is an inspiring as a wet lettuce!
now please just get rid of him so we can all move on instead of having listen to thuggresses like geraldine smith or thugs like hilary benn telling us all that we must do as we are told an get behind mr. brown….in fact young geraldine told sky news yesterday that apparently if u stand up for yourself u wont get bullied…do u think she meant little children as well?
nice woman…caring?
but thats what your goverment is all about now…the nasty party!
except u tom….u are alright
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 3:15 pm
Well done for speaking your mind and not coming off as a cock on Newsnight which most of us know is easier said than done!
I may not agree with you often but I can’t have Brown staying just because it’s better for the Tories. That’s just not good for the country!
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 3:16 pm
I see he has not changed at all.
“Gordon Brown is refusing to publish the independent report which Downing Street says clears Labour MP Shahid Malik – who stepped down as Justice Minister – over his housing arrangements.” DT.
Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 3:26 pm
Tom.
Gordon should remember; Labour scored 15% in a national poll, THE DAY BEFORE half the cabinet resigned. I wonder what you would poll today? If he had _any_ decency, or respect for Labour, or the country, he would go and go now.
I’m _very_ confident that the majority (90%+) of UKIP voters would switch to the Tories in a GE so the Tories actually ‘effectively’ scored near to the 44% Blair polled in EU elections before becoming PM. The Labour vote was not split by UKIP in the same way the Tories vote was last week.
I think you were wrong when you said you could win with another leader, but I do think you could lose less badly. I’m just undecided yet as to whether thats a good or a bad thing… (I don’t believe the Comres ‘Johnson’ poll at all, their recent history shows they have serious problems in their polling methodology!)

The Daily Record isn’t best known for accuracy. Or insight. Or quality journalism. It’s obviously in Brown’s pocket.
Rab C Nesbitt had it right – “moaning faced Scottish rag”. (The classic Spain episode!)
Thursday 11 June 2009 at 5:19 pm
The worry is what more damage Brown can do to Scotland before his tenure ends. The sooner he is out the safer I will feel.
