HAVING been given a sneak preview of today’s ballot paper for the election of the Speaker, I may have to revise my view that there’s no whipping operation for Margaret Beckett.
Still, good to see that the paper has the authentic look of something that’s been produced by the House of Commons authorities.
What do you think?

Nice one.

Looks like a bit of a red act…
Monday 22 June 2009 at 11:32 am
Very droll!
But very good.

Tom,
Sorry, but this is clearly a forgery and ‘whoever’ prepared it, paid no attention to detail. There are 10 candidates (nine on your redacted ballot paper) and Margeret B is first alphabetically.
Made me smile though!

Tom, you are a wag!
)
Have you been “Whipped” into making the right decision yet?
Monday 22 June 2009 at 12:24 pm
Thanks Tom. Very droll — but a slightly low blow aimed at the House of Commons Service.
The policy on redactions of receipts etc was agreed and implemented by the Members Estimate Committee, and it’s somewhat cheap to pretend that Commons staff wielded the black pen without political authority.

His – not intended as a “low blow” against my colleagues here at the House, as I’m sure they realise. Pity you can’t take a joke.

Touché
Monday 22 June 2009 at 1:01 pm
Very good, Tom.
You have probably incurred so much wrath from the autolefties by now that you can sink in their estimation no further.
Which is excellent for your chances of promotion when the sensible Blairites split or conquer.

Tres amusant, as the French say.
Unfortunately truth mirrors art.
Monday 22 June 2009 at 1:53 pm
That’s a laugh out loud in Room 2. Good one Tom.

Cue commenters with no sense of humour in 3, 2…

You have a great sense of humour for a Labourite, you sure you’re not a Tory at heart?

[...] If we are to believe the politicians and the press, today’s election is going to be the signal for a new reform of all that is ill in the present system. It will restore the public’s trust in parliament, reinvigorate democracy, and bring world peace in our time. Accordingly it gets solemn po-faced leaders in all four of the broadsheets: Times, Guardian, Independent and Telegraph. Though kudos to Tom Harris for poking fun at it. [...]

I see you are keeeping both hands visible to the camera as you sit in the corner behind Margaret.
Monday 22 June 2009 at 2:51 pm
Well-spotted, Peter – Toronto. But also clearly a forgery as the date today is Monday 22nd June, not the 23rd!

Very amusing
Monday 22 June 2009 at 3:08 pm
Ah, humour. I’ve heard mention of it.
Monday 22 June 2009 at 3:25 pm
Very witty and dare I say clever.
Monday 22 June 2009 at 4:54 pm
Posts like these are why I keep coming back, Tom.
Good one.

There’s a lot of jollity around today! Your leader just cracked two jokes in the House and they were actually funny:-)
