CAROLYN is a big fan of Agatha Christie, so years ago I bought us tickets to The Mousetrap in London. I enjoy watching Christie adaptations on TV and on stage, so I was looking forward to it. And then a friend who was round for dinner one evening decided it would be humorous to ruin the ending of The Moustrap for me by telling me whodunnit (you know who you are, Moffat!).
I still enjoyed it, but of course would have preferred not to know the identity of the culprit in advance.
Tonight Carolyn told me that the Irish comedian, Ed Byrne, is advertising his gigs on Capital Radio at the moment by telling listeners to go see his gig instead of The Mousetrap and revealing the identity of the murderer just to make the competition less attractive. All very post-ironic and anarchic, I’m sure, but I’d be furious if I hadn’t already seen it and was planning to.
Anyway, if you’ve heard the advert then you’ll already know that it was ███ ███████. So now you know.

Is the answer Gordon Brown? People seem to think he’s to blame for everything at the moment.

Typical MP, redacting stuff at the first sign of trouble…

The usual disclaimer applies, but the Font Of All Knowledge says “By tradition, at the end of each performance, audiences are asked not to reveal the identity of the killer to anyone outside the theatre, to ensure that the end of the play isn’t spoiled for future audiences. The play has been running for so long that its twist is fairly common knowledge, and the ritual has become the occasional butt of jokes, such as Paul Merton’s revelation of the ending on a television programme.”

Comedians have been revealing the ending for years, especially Paul Merton, he used to include it regularly during his stand-up routines – it’s how I found out.
The same thing happen when the Sixth Sense was first released, comedians used to reveal the twist ending. All very groundbreaking humour…
As an aside, Christie’s final resting place is only about 10 mins away from me.

@Paul Williams
I wouldn’t be too sure about the final resting place bit.
I think you’d find an empty grave if you
did an exhumation.
Actually, I know where the body is, but as there’s a disputed will at stake, and a certain tattoo which gives a vital clue, I’m not saying.

That’ll teach you for listening to Crapital Radio.

Hmm. I assumed he was being funny and it was someone else until I read this blog…
And yes, The Sixth Sense thing really annoyed me at the time too, as I’d just bought the DVD but hadn’t seen it – bloody Tim Lovejoy, I never watched Soccer AM again. I watched it a few days later with my wife (who didn’t know) and it was like we were watching two different films. Only hers was good.
