FORMER Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has recorded this message to the American people, warning them not to take The Eccentric Mr Hannan too seriously when he starts to go all swivel-eyed over the NHS.
But in recording the video, JP has identified a crucial area of public policy: why are MPs allowed to record videos on the Terrace of the House of Commons whereas my constituents are frequently told by police officers that they’re not allowed to take photographs?
Honestly, it’s one rule for them MPs and another for the rest of us…

Honestly, it’s one rule for them MPs and another for the rest of us…
Well I’m sure that any other smug millionaire mp would be allowed to do it.
Shame you still believe that the erosion of civil liberties and the growth of the surveillance state is a laughing matter.

If you think it wrong that only MPs can take pictures and videos – why not do something about it? Or is it as with the expenses fiasco that MPs will all say “it was the system what did it – not me!”

I wonder why the terrace isn’t open to the public during the recess.
If there is one place that could be popular during the summer months, it’s a riverside pub!

Honestly, I got a shock recently, I didn’t realise that Presser was still an MP – thought someone might have elevated him to the House of Lords (isn’t that how it works in the ‘club’).
Anyway, we all know that MPs do as they please so what’s all the fuss about?
MEPs seem to be even worse (of course I’m referring to future North Kentucky Congressman Dan).
Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:04 pm
Actually, what a treasure, Presser is our very own (fairly passive, more eloquent) version of George W Bush.
Forget Fox News, he should be in Madame Tussauds!
Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:05 pm
It is only the Terrace of the House we aren’t allowed to photograph or video. It’s getting riddiculas.
As part of the Governing Party, can’t you do something Tom?
It’s not just unfair it’s a question of civil rights.
Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:27 pm
about the differential security arrangements I was just about to say something to the effect that MPs aren’t likely to shoot themselves. However, in hindsight there is some danger here especially in the foot area.

“Honestly, it’s one rule for them MPs and another for the rest of us…”
Maybe. Unless we’re told what the rules are who knows?
“On the issues of what a citizen may lawfully do in the High St – whether ID must be supplied on demand, and whether photographing a police officer, or even being too tall, was grounds for arrest – neither Chatham nor Kent [police] would provide any further comment. Kent police appeared especially unhappy at providing the public with any guidance as to what constituted an offence.”

Just a storm in a teacup. Hannon is a Euro MP and is not at Westminster. Had you missed that Tom.
Mind you he is right.
Saturday 15 August 2009 at 7:03 pm
At least Americans can identify with Tubby Prescott’s body shape!
Saturday 15 August 2009 at 7:05 pm
‘I was the Deputy Prime Minister to Tony Blair for ten years’.
Yeah, thanks for reminding us.
We’d forgotten.

Hannangate has certainly highlighted the ideological differences between Labour and the Tories. Central Power versus less state control. Or should it be universal care for all or care depending on your salary. I found Mr Hannan’s comments shocking. The PM should have interupted his hols for TV interviews in order to stick one on the Tories.
Sky’s reporting of the matter has been predictable bearing in mind that Hannan’s comments were made on Sky’s sister station Fox. Watch the Daily Show and observe how daft some of these Fox people are. Excellent company for Mr Hannan then.
John Prescott’s comments about the matter on Sky News yesterday were excellent. Maybe that’s why his interview never really got any further airplay.
The Tory take on it appears to be that this is merely a debate, but for me it highlights alot more. It shows there attitude to a lot more.
It’s also a pity that no government spokesperson has done a Hannan a went to America to stick up for the NHS (and Obama) and once again highlight that yes the NHS might not be perfect, but that it is universal care system for all, unlike an American system, which in 2009 still neglects millions of its citizens.
That speaks volumes for me and defines the difference between Labour and the Tories. It is something we all should remember the nearer the election get.

It doesn’t matter if pictures or videos are taken on the terrace of the House of Commons. The issue is whether the words emanating from whom ever’s mouth are accurate and free of spin.
The dirty wards and the infections resulting in the NHS system over the years have killed more people than those who perished in Belsen.
Discuss!

Good for John. I bet Fox News haven’t shown it or had him on for an interview.
Jon Stewart is sticking it to Fox News too.

Hasn’t John put on a few pounds. Hope his BUPA membership is up to date.
Saturday 15 August 2009 at 11:59 pm
Tom, many professional jobs include the perk of BUPA membership in the salary package. Is it included in an MPs renumeration?

So, Tom, not planning to approve Al Jahom’s comment then? Did it prick what’s left of your conscience?
Sunday 16 August 2009 at 11:59 am
Actually it does highlight a serious issue. Statistics are not safe in the hands of those who don’t understand them.
Jabba the Prescott, for instance, says that deaths from heart disease are down 25% in the south-east. Ok, fair enough that’s an improvement, but does that prove the NHS is the best? Not even in the slightest. Perhaps another health system would have lowered deaths by 40%, or maybe another one by only 10%.
You cannot conclude that the NHS is the best system there is simply by looking at simple stats on their own. You have to pick something to compare your stat to, and then you can make your conclusions. For instance, had he had stats showing that deaths from strokes were down 42% in Britain since 1997 and only 10% in America then perhaps he might have had a case. As he didn’t, then all he is doing is sitting on a terrace reading out a list of numbers.

And before you play the race card, Tom, here’s a little clarity for you and your readers:
