JUST back from a top night at the National Rail Awards. Great to see a whole bunch of people from the industry I haven’t seen since… well, for a while.
And the best bit was that Scotland triumphed: Glasgow Central was named as Station of the Year, and First Scotrail won Passenger Operator of the Year – the only time the same operator has won the award two years in a row.
The awards were all the more welcome given the massive blow dealt to the Scottish rail industry by the Scottish Government earlier today, with the cancelation of the Glasgow Airport rail link. Particularly discouraging for me, since this was one of the major capital projects I helped promote when I worked for Strathclyde Passenger Transport Excutive before becoming an MP.
Anyway, well done to Scotrail and to Glasgow Central. Well deserved.

Yes, Well done Scotrail . . . – - – . . . Now can we talk about the 9.3% cuts by Labour which seems to be somewhat of an embarrassment for you Tom . . . as you seem to be studiously ignoring it.

This is a terrible decision which can only damage the business prospects of Glasgow and the West of Scotland. GARL is needed to ensure that Glasgow remains able to compete with other majot cities in the rest of the UK (and Europe for that matter) as a business, leisure and retail location. When I visited Toronto last year, the project that senior transport officers and politicians were most keen to learn about was GARL. Looks like they may now have their rail connection before us.

Psst Tom.
We have run out of money. Why cannot Labour people understand basic econmics. There comes a point when borrowing has to stop and payback begins. It should have started about 4 years ago at least.
So I say well done Scotland as the labour government would just go on and on.
Labour are like children they want something so they will have it no matter what the cost. I think Scotland has taken a mature lead this time.

When will these rail ‘Oscars’ be televised?
Friday 18 September 2009 at 8:39 am
In New Labour’s world everyone wins prizes – even stations. Ye Gods…

Silent Hunter – Just a word to remind you that any comment – from anyone – which accuses the Prime Minister or anyone else, of whichever party, of being a liar, will not be published.
Friday 18 September 2009 at 9:35 am
For years I kept looking at the grimy mess that was Glasgow Central thinking, “Wow, this must have been some structure when it was first built.”
I always thought that it should have been a jewel in Glasgow’s architecture but generations of neglect made it look remarkably run down.
Surprised it won against things like the new St. Pancras station.

Are we allowed to say that someone else has called the Prime Minister a liar as did the BBC yesterday when it reported that, in the wake of the leaked documents, David Cameron practically accused Gordon Brown of lying?
Friday 18 September 2009 at 11:38 am
But he didn’t call him a l..r
If the BBC wishes to interpret Mr Cameron’s words in that way they may; the practically sort of gives away the fact that he didn’t actually do it.
Friday 18 September 2009 at 11:54 am
Tom do you remember the PM saying at PMQs over and over again there would be no cuts. Now there are going to be cuts. What does than make him then. at best grossly mistaken.
Friday 18 September 2009 at 12:02 pm
Tom, you are either seriously rattled or being very dry with your humour. I favour the latter. Lies is lies. If somebody tells you they are not cutting public spending and then has advanced plans to do so, coupled with news today that the Chancellor is doing exactly that, and bearing in mind that Fraser Nelson put Mr Brown on record (as far as you can with somebody who never answers questions) then it’s mea culpa.
As for the Glasgow rail link, you are on home ground here, with a vast array of knowledge and experience, but the fact remains, major capital project spending at this time is a luxury we cannot afford. You are accusing the SNP of everything except eating children at the moment, and I have gone along with it because some of it was justified, but the spend, spend, spend days are over. Some very hard decisions have to be made in the world of reality, and this is one of them. As for the cry that it is “anti-Glasgow” (not by you) it is so petulant as to require the originator of this to be publicly egged.

@Chris’ Wills – Come, come, Chris, isn’t this splitting hairs? No-one would expect DC to state his accusation so baldly! If ‘practically’ is synonymous with ‘to all intents and purposes’ then the Beeb was reporting that he did actually do it.
What would you call the offence of publicly denying the possibility of cuts while privately discussing plans to make cuts – merely the politics of governance?
Friday 18 September 2009 at 12:40 pm
Incidentally, there is NO truth to the rumour that the UK government will entirely fund the high speed rail link from London to Scotland as payoff for the release of the Lockerbie bomber.
None whatsoever.
Just thought I’d clear that up before someone started suggesting such fabrications.
Friday 18 September 2009 at 2:09 pm
@Jay – I do believe it is called mis-speaking. Either way, as a young lad, I would have been punished by my parents…
Friday 18 September 2009 at 3:37 pm
Ok Tom.
Thanks for making my point for me though.
Can I also assume that in the interests of fairness . . . any one saying the same about David Cameron, Nick Clegg, et all from the other parties, including you, will similarly ‘not be published’?
Friday 18 September 2009 at 3:44 pm
Having read the comments here . . . it would seem that I’m not alone in my assessment of your glorious leader, Tom.
Perhaps, if you look back, Browns ‘honesty’ may also be the reason that you were one of the few Labour MP’s with the cojones to tell him he had to go.
Or have the Labour Whips persuaded you that you didn’t in fact say this. . . a bit like . . . “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for”
) Eh? Obi Wan.

I travel on First Scotrail both on the Glasgow urban network and on the Glasgow-Edinburgh express and they are excellent with friendly staff and a pretty good adherence to the timetable. Well done to all concerned.

@Scott – Ah, “mis-speaking”. Perhaps this is one of those New Labour words, in the manner of “Arbeit Macht Frei”.
