AFTER some conspiring with comrade-in-blogs Jonathan Isaby over at conservativehome yesterday, we agreed that our campaign to persuade returning officers to count votes on the same night as polling might be helped by the tabling of an Early Day Motion (EDM) to that effect.
The fact that Chairman Pickles himself added his name as one of the top six supporters undoubtedly encouraged others of his party to support it. By the time it was tabled last night it had attracted 69 names (the clerks couldn’t read Chris Huhne’s signature so it will be added belatedly today) and many more have been added to the list today.
The EDM reads:
That this House is concerned at reports that growing numbers of Returning Officers are considering postponing the counting of votes cast on the day of the General Election until the day after polling; believes that in the 21st century it would be a regressive move not to announce constituency results as early as possible; further believes that public confidence in the results could be undermined by delays in the counting of ballot papers and that fewer voters would be able to watch the results being announced if this were done on a Friday afternoon; and calls on local authorities throughout the United Kingdom to ensure that all ballot papers are counted immediately after the close of polls on General Election night, as has been the practice in previous General Elections.
There’s already been a bit of media interest in the subject; I’m giving a couple of interviews later this afternoon. If we can get the numbers up as high as possible, that’ll send a clear message that when there’s an election, the voters, as well as the parties, have a right to know the result as early as possible.

Could you add to the motion that the result for our ex-home secretary, Miss Smith, is scheduled for a specific time.
I need to set the video for this “Portillo moment”.
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 1:54 pm
I agree with your sentiment, Tom, but surely EDMs are as much use as the other sort of early day motion, and nowhere near as satisfying?
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 1:54 pm
I whole-heartedly agree.
Slightly off-topic but, if the unthinkable does happen next May, when looking for new opportunities, you might be interested in this.

If It were possible to combine the Le Mans 24 hour race with the spectacle of the Roman Arena, with a running commentary from sleep-deprived, inebriated 10 year olds, it could not match the drama, the comedy, the tragedy and sheer Britishness of Election night.
The book was called, “Were you up for Portillo” NOT, “did you catch the lunchtime hews”

Really Tom?
First week back and the political anoraks version of the world cup is one of your priorities?
Surely Labour want to delay the count by as long as possible?
Here’s a thought though – you could be the first MP (to my knowledge) to post a PDF of their Legg Letter.
Would do wonders for your ratings (not that you need it).
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 3:08 pm
You have are completely two-faced about this (or I have a bad memory, in which case I apologise unreservedly).
Are you not the one who was completely against electronic voting, counting ballots as soon as they come in and announcing the results very soon after the polls close?
If you were in a constituency of 60,000 voters and you started counting as soon as the votes came in you could have one candidate on 30,001 votes by early evening and announce the second the polls close. But you were not in favour of that as far as I can recall. Something about the result getting out early and people not bothering to vote, if memory serves.

You’re new to this blog, Iain, so it’s understandable that you’re unaware of my editorial policy: I write what I want without reference to the suggestion and prejudices of my commenters. In short, if you don’t want to read my posts, then don’t.

Actually, the SNP MP’s have all agreed to publish their letters… Strangely no other MP’s have (to date).
Although Tom should have been allowed to claim that crib I think…
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 4:11 pm
Amen Tom!
So, will you show the nice letter from Legg?
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 4:46 pm
I don’t get this idea that politicians time should somehow be taken up 110% of the time with the serious issues of the day. If Tom didn’t blog, I bet you wouldn’t write to his office asking to be reassured he doesn’t spend five minutes on the loo thinking about what’s for tea tonight, because there are more important things to worry about!?

Math Campbell: “Actually, the SNP MP’s have all agreed to publish their letters… Strangely no other MP’s have (to date).”
Have the SNP actually published their letters online? I can’t find them. Can you let me have the URL? Thanks.

Gotta luv the spin that Legg attempting to quantify ‘reasonable’ has had MPs bleating that ‘the rules have changed’.
They haven’t.
1. They were unrules and
2. They haven’t changed.
And as for the MPs who are threatening to ’see you in court’ I can only say ‘bring it on’ and be very very careful what you wish for.
Sadly, even now, they just don’t get it.

So EXACTLY how much extra is it costing tax payers for all this overnight counting vs just waiting until the next day? If you don’t mind I’d rather NOT pay for a General Election to be an entertainment event.

@ Iain Gill
As far as I’m concerned anyone who started posting after ‘why is everyone so miserable?’ is new to the blog…

As a political activist who, over many years, has attended most counts for the Glasgow South and Cathcart constituency, I have to say that I very much hope that the count continues to be done as soon as the polls close. It may not be an issue of great importance to the voters but I believe that most of those who attend counts would not welcome any change. While I will not be voting for you Tom, I urge you to do your best to keep the status quo.
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 9:34 pm
Totally support the motion, but please add that the polls close at 8pm not 10pm.
Those two hours would be much better spent counting than sitting in deserted polling stations.
Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 10:51 pm
I was going to email my MP to sign it, but he already has.
I don’t like the idea of all those boxes being left overnight. Know what I mean?
Simon: thanks for the link. Pure gallas, by the way!

You seem to be carrying on as if all credibility in the House of Commons had not collapsed. We no longer give a fig for what you and your like think. It doesn’t matter anymore. Watching the coverage of the Commons today was like watching a slow motion car crash.
The PM is going to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan provided they can be properly equipped. Presumably 1000 will be coming home first to pool their kit to share among the next contingent. It would be funny if people’s lives were not at risk.
Meanwhile you sign a pathetic EDM.
And you used to be one of the good guys.

It must be right to count as soon as possible. Its another change thats proposed from somewhere. It will be from one of the many labour quangos just thinking up things to upset us.
Get stuck in Tom and fight the change it must be your number 1 priority as its easy to understand. What happened to that roof protest.
Did you lead the SAS in the attack. Have you changed your funny money into legal tender yet. we need feed back on these issues. You never even told us what your tribe had to eat at the Scottish restaurant. I hope it was the healthy option and that they were careful with the hot coffee as it can burn you if you spill it on you.
Counting the day after polling. The very Idea .we are not some trendy country. I like my rituals and traditions and I want to stay up on polling night with my bottle Islay whisky, after having read the warning label first of course.
Please nanny Labour government do not muck up our polls as well, leave us something. I promiss to read all warnings you have printed for my benifit.

To the po-faced people who chime, with the regularity of a Swiss clock, “waste of tax-payer’s money”, apart from being massively entertaining, it is also a very substantial safeguard against voting fraud, which is now a depressing reality in this country:

Some people don’t ‘alf ‘ave short memories.

It is the best tele night of the year. Besides, if the results were announced the following day when the majority of the public are at work, or rushing around from nursery to school to kitchen very few people would be able to follow it, and the results would dribble in unnoticed. All adding to the sense that It Doesn’t Really Matter. And actually It Really Really Does.
Thursday 15 October 2009 at 6:52 am
Given the array of voting fraud that went on last election, I’d rather the boxes weren’t locked up overnight where we can’t see them.
Thursday 15 October 2009 at 11:08 am
Just asked Mr John Maples to sign your EDM Tom. Thankfully the returning officer for my area has already said that the Thursday count will go ahead!
