A FEW days ago I compared members of the South West Norfolk Conservative Association to “a village idiots’ convention” because of their treatment of their new parliamentary candidate, Liz Truss. I later repeated this description on The Westminster Hour on Sunday evening.
I wish to issue an apology. Village idiots up and down the country do an important and difficult job and they do not deserve to be compared to members of South West Norfolk Conservative Association.
I hope that’s cleared that up.

Somebody should tell them that “Normal for Norfolk” is not meant to be an aspiration.
Wednesday 4 November 2009 at 5:41 pm
For once, Tom. we are in full agreement.
Wednesday 4 November 2009 at 5:48 pm
You’re beautiful, Tom.
Wednesday 4 November 2009 at 5:54 pm
Acherley Tom, you were harsher than that, but more specific:
“the epitome of a village idiots’ convention.”
epitome
noun
personification, embodiment, incarnation, paragon; essence, quintessence, archetype, paradigm; exemplar, model, soul, example; height.
Until recently I had thought that conservative Norfolk referred to the turkeys and the fragrant food brand promoter, Delia Smith, whose cookery tends to be conservative.
I must say I support the rights of the Tory Party, severally, individually and collectively to make a pig’s breakfast/dog’s purse of themselves. Unless the electorate get careless.

You don’t know the half of it. Calling the people of East Anglia “village idiots” is like castigating Zimbabweans for believing in Witchcraft.
Puritanical morality is endemic. Ignorance of the rest of the UK is seen as a badge of honour and “parochial” does not adequately describe it. East Anglia is deeply racist, homophobic, right-wing and feudal. I had the misfortune to be “born and bred” there (yes, I can prove it).
None of these attitudes have gone away, they have merely been driven underground by prevalent public opinion elsewhere in the UK.
I cannot help thinking, though, that you are overreaching yourself; if locals people take a view on public morality, their wishes should be respected.

“Village idiots up and down the country do an important and difficult job.”
Yeah, they canvass for Labour.

@wrinkled weasel
How much respect do you think localism deserves? Will you be doffing your cap to the Wicker folk? How far has cultural relativism reached into the right wing on Tom’s blog?
Think I just read another hilarious post suggesting some sort of inbreeding? Another way of keeping the numbers up I suppose . . .
Wednesday 4 November 2009 at 8:32 pm
Most of them are incomers….or as we call them……….STRANGERS

I find these racist remarks very poor show from a Labour MP.
True but racist.
Scotch g*t

Cultural Relativism?
Wicker Men?
Perhaps there is a reason that I feel as comfortable in East Lothian as I do in East Anglia.
It is still neo-colonial to try and dress the natives in underpants.
Tom should mind his own business and be glad he is more enlightened.
I am off to wean the good people of Glasgow NE off Deep Fried Pizzas and Lambert & Butlers. I consider it my duty, as a Christian to make them see the error of their ways.
BTW:
The funniest thing, by far the funniest thing about the by-election is to see someone who looks like Man at C&A towering above the pelagra sufferers and fag-wizened 30 year-old grannies in Springburn, trying to make out that he is a local boy.
Wednesday 4 November 2009 at 11:34 pm
Glad you still remember ” Man at C&A ”
You can see him again at the top of this page.
Another company forced out by Labour.
Thursday 5 November 2009 at 9:48 am
The were no men at C & A, just lumber jacks.
Thursday 5 November 2009 at 9:48 am
Or should that have been singular?
Thursday 5 November 2009 at 10:36 am
I should have thought the Scunner Salmond was used to being asked about selling rotting fish, from the head on down they do say . . .

Typical labourite brown tongued utterances on here – blindly follow the leader – doff the cloth cap and don’t make the one brain cell work too hard. South West Norfolk Conservatives have the backbone (Invertebrate = Tom Harris)to think for themselves and not unthinkingly follow the bidding of the party head office – learn a lesson in integrity you who are witless Labour back scratchers!!
The candidate concerned could be into all kinds of weird and wonderful sexual stuff but that does not matter – the fact that she was not honest enough to just mention what she had done in the past and the fact that she is being parachuted into Norfolk by Conservative HQ do matter – she knows basically sod all about Norfolk and what we need is a candidate that understands what our concerns and needs are. We that are Norfolk born and bred do not need namby- pampy Westminster types telling us what to do – we have the gumption to plough our own furrow and the true British spirit of fire in the blood!!
Whilst Labour busy themselves with handing our country over to Brussels we in Norfolk will not be dictated to by those that in so many cases are not fit to lick our boots.
By the way, I am not a Conservative voter – nor am I any longer a Labour voter (too many of Tom Harriss ilk!!) – no, UKIP are becoming a very attractive alternative – certainly well worth consideration.
My grandfather fought and died of his wounds in the first world war – my father fought in the second world war – what was all that about? – all those wasted lives on both sides – all, these years later and we surrender without even having a say in what is being done in our name – millions must be turning in their graves!!
Tom Harris, you are the weakest link – goodbye!! – well, go on then – pee off!!!!
