SOME politicians are very protective of their private lives. Others prefer to splash every detail in the hope of garnering some positive PR.
Personally, I’ve tried to find a middle way: although Carolyn is frequently pictured with me, we never allow pictures of our boys to be published anywhere and I don’t even refer to them by their real names on this blog. At the same time, this is a personal blog so inevitably some details of life at Casa Harris emerge from time to time.
But this is as blatant and as cynical an example of shameless politiking as I’ve ever seen. As Guido (hat-tip, by the way) rightly asks, I wonder if the blushing bride knew if the photographic memories of her happy day were going to be used for political propaganda?
No wonder the public hate politicians.

Although a conservative voter (or I would be if I was still living in the UK, but remain a UK taxpayer “no taxation without representation” comes to mind) I wholly agree; it was childish and tacky.
BTW – what did you think of the Queen’s Speach? Were you one of the 127 Labour MPs that bothered to turn up to the start of the subsequent debate?
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 2:52 pm
It’s not because of this that the public hate politicians, is it? I mean really, is it? They can just choose to ignore the news about their possible future MP, they didn’t pay for the leaflets or their delivery, does it matter?
Ironically, it’s your politciking about what you think is someone else’s politicking that’s more concerning. It makes you look pretty mean spirited. It also makes it look like you’ve got time to kill.
Now stop reading this and get back to work or have a cup of tea or something.

I am in this constituency and I’m outraged! I haven’t even had a copy of this leaflet. Does this mean a) He doesn’t want my vote? b) He does want my vote? c) My wife through it out before I saw it?
I think I should be told

“No wonder the public hate politicians.”
You finally admit we have cause to ?
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 3:38 pm
OK, its a bit weird, but its hardly shameless politicking. Its not as if he makes any mention of policies, opponents, etc. Seems to me just an inappropriate forum to report one’s happy day! (and he’s clearly chuffed to bits). Someone who has difficulty distinguishing between their home and political lives – sounds like those MPs who furious blog away on their home PCs all night…
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 3:43 pm
It must be a spoof, not even a Tory candidate could be so crass and vulgar…
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 3:53 pm
Out of interest, what made you choose murderers’ names (Kray twins) as pseudonyms for your children?
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 3:54 pm
Again Tom you just cannot see another point of view. I would not do this sort of thing and nor would you, but hey come on. He just wants everyone to know he is not gay as you are not allowed to ask about that sot of thing anymore.
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 4:02 pm
I’m not sure I agree, I’m staunch anti-tory but I have to say it just strikes me that he’s fantastically happy (seems so in the pictures).
I was expecting some awful kind of ‘and as his best man, he knew that he’d be the best man to represent you’…etc etc
At worst he seems to want to appeal to people as a genuine human that has a life outside politics. So yes, using a personal event for political ends, but hell, who doesn’t these days? Kids are different granted, because they don’t have a choice, but they are both adults and if they want to use their pictures in that why why not?
I can actually understand the idea that perhaps it might be nice to see a different side to a candidate than just what they think about the local community centre shutting etc. It’s a little sickly, but on the whole I actually think it’s sweet.

Lets hope he doesn’t have an affair.
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 4:36 pm
I can see lots of photos of the bride’s father. Where is the groom???
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 4:39 pm
Bloody hell, what an amateur.
He should see what I can do with public money.
Dual mandate means even more chances to promote myself as the Greatest Scotsman.

Who else but a shameless politician would tell the world that he shared the wedding cake with his constituents (it was four tiered – each constituent would have been lucky to get a crumb), makes sure that everyone knows that the best man is not any old John Kennedy but Councillor John Kennedy (is he owed a favour?), let’s it be known that it was a ‘big’ wedding (ooh, 120 guests) so he’s A Very Popular Person and Sophisticated (far-travelled guests).
I bet he makes a point of kissing babies, too.

It’s as if Ken’s saying: vote for me and you too can share a little bit of my life of sunshine, lollipops and rainbows.
Mrs Ken’s hair looks like it needs a good brushing.
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 6:01 pm
I can’t get my head around the mindset of someone who would produce a leaflet about their wedding and then deliver thousands to people in their local area.
What makes them think anyone is remotely interested? And then there is the calculation that doing so will help the guy get elected to Parliament (almost a -”I might be a Tory, but I’m still a normal guy”)
Completely puzzling – I wonder how it has gone down in the consituency……
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 8:11 pm
she’s beautiful, he’s proud, I think it’s rather sweet actually. I bet the leaflet took less time to produce than oooh, let’s say, a couple of blog posts? And another thing (if we must) – I bet he doesn’t come back from honeymoon and immediately go into print defending the world’s most high profile adulterer. I’m just saying…
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 9:07 pm
Look, can we talk about this later, in private?
Thursday 19 November 2009 at 10:45 pm
Talking of leaflets….. I know a very good printer.
(Please, not the Dual Mandate, got enough problems at the moment)
Friday 20 November 2009 at 12:11 am
Stop flirting online, you too (LOL) Just go away and ‘discuss’ it….
Friday 20 November 2009 at 9:15 am
Typical New Labour politician – even lies about the names of his children!

“But this is as blatant and as cynical an example of shameless politiking as I’ve ever seen.”
Is it really?
Straight forward question Tom. Is this more or less cynical than seeing passenger jets hit commercial office towers and then posting an email suggesting it was an opportune moment to ‘bury bad news’?
