CAROLYN claimed in advance that even if I didn’t really like The Eleventh Hour, I would insist that I did, just because Steven Moffat’s a friend.
But the fact is, I absolutely loved it! Genuinely. Matt Smith was a revelation as the Doctor – just perfect. And the plot – and especially the brilliant script – were up there with Steven’s previous efforts for Doctor Who. I just wish every episode could be an hour and five minutes long instead of 45 minutes.
Although quite a low-key adventure, it did the job of introducing the new Doctor and Amy. There were far fewer loose ends and “reversing the polarity of the neutron flow” explanations of previous years, and the nod to our hero’s previous ten incarnations at the end totally worked.
Some minor quibbles: I did not like the new “disco” version of the theme tune, although the new graphics were very good. The “what did I see?” line was a bit clumsy and jarred a bit; it reminded me of the “what have we learned today?” sequences beloved of certain irritating CBeebies programmes (although the actual mechanism of reviewing what the Doctor had seen was ingenious). And I thought we were going to get an explanation as to why the Tardis is now an exact replica of Peter Cushing’s ship from the 1960s “Dalek” movies. Maybe next week…
I took a look at the fan forum last night, where 80 per cent of contributors had given the episode at least eight out of ten (I gave it nine). Mainstream media reviews also seem to have been very positive.
So, a general election campaign and a new series of Doctor Who: does it get better than this?

Matt Smith was terrible. Like a drama school product surrounded by drama school products all acting their little red coat hearts out. Like it was either this or S Club.
I blame my nephews for subjecting me to that.
Still. Each to their own.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were pictured in the Daily Mirror offices last week. So once again a socialist dons the ‘Who’ mantle. Perhaps Matt can use his sonic screwdriver to vanquish Cameron and co. for good. Metabelis-3 should be good enough for him.

Did not watch it. I have not watched it since my children grew up.I did watch the boat race and a great race it was with Cambridge winning. You will soon have plenty of time to plan your viwewing Tom.

Spherical objects – it was terrific

Well I watched it with my little boy and a delicious pizza. Fantastic nights viewing and a triumph for the BBC. Matt Smith had some big shoes to fill, but did so admirably. Amy will certainly help me to get over Martha Jones! Next week she might be dressed as one of the Commons Clerks Tom!

Watched it today. Think I’ll let it sink in a bit. One thing, though, that ‘nod’ reminded me too much of the bit in Claremont’s X-Men where a Shi’ar battle cruiser enters the earth system chasing some fugitive (Lillandra?) and, on discovering in the databanks that the earth has ‘driven off Galactus’, the captain orders the cruiser out of the system at warp factor ‘run like fun’. Can’t help thinking the Doctor has played that card before, or else I’m thinking of some other melodramatic bluffer (the mouse in ‘The Gruffalo’?). Either way, I think it would take more than six words to vanquish the Atraxi.

Another prisoner who can change shape hiding on Earth and several nods to previous episodes. That’s my only snagging point.
It was really great. Matt Smith will be great. I did not think I’d say that. But to have Steven Moffat and Matt Smith – tremendous.
Watched it 3 times. First time I would give it 7, second 8, third 9. I can only watch it one more time or I’ll cause a paradox.
